Car Park Conversion To Self Storage Facility

This was a complete conversion and change of use project, taking an existing car park and creating a brand new 400+ unit self-storage facility.

The Project

For this project, we were involved in the work to convert a car park into a self-storage facility.

USS were responsible for installing the infill mezzanine, trimmer with supporting steel for the lift shaft and installed the staircase.

The new self-storage facility was designed to hold approximately 400 storage units over two floors, requiring the installation of storage partitioning and swing and roller shutter doors. In addition to this, and in conjunction with the client, we also devised new lock housings and fitted the locks, ready to be wired for smartphone-operated locking.

Our Client

Attic Self-Storage are an independent, award-winning self-storage space provider based in London. The self-storage facility in Marylebone was the latest addition to Attic’s portfolio.

The Challenge

USS were sent an invitation to tender which included provision of project drawings for the work. Our quote was accepted and we proceeded with the work.

A survey for the steelwork package was carried out, and fabrication drawings were completed. Following these activities, we then carried out the manufacture and installation work.

The project presented a few challenges, not least of which was its scheduled start date during the 2020 COVID-19 shutdown.

In terms of the project itself, working on an existing building rather than new building meant everything had to be designed to “fit in” rather than starting from scratch with a clean design. The biggest challenge we faced in this regard was the uneven concrete floor.

And Finally

Our experience in similar projects ensured we could mitigate any issues from the beginning, at design level. The accuracy of the designs produced by the USS design team ensured the fit was correct.

We Are Happy to Say

United Storage were extremely helpful, completing this tricky project under difficult circumstances, including through Covid-19. Their attention to detail at the design stage helped the installation progress smoothly, while the pragmatism and hard work of their entire team helped enormously. We are delighted with the final fit & finish of the product, which meets Attic’s very high quality standards, and very pleased that our fantastic new self-storage facility in central London is now open for business.
