Self-Storage Fit-Out for Building With Unconventional Configuration

A brand-new self-storage store in the town of Swindon. This project challenged us to design self-storage units that maximised the use of space in an unconventionally shaped building.

The Project

The store consists of a single-tier mezzanine floor and fire protection works.  This complete self-storage fit-out included storage partitioning manufacture and installation over two floors.  300-plus units with swing and roller shutter doors were installed.

The units range in size from 15 to 250 square feet.  The security for each unit incorporates our Boss Latch, which utilises a cylinder lock rather than the traditional padlock.  The near-flush lock provides additional protection to deter attackers.

Our Client

Cubic Storage is a growing self-storage business with facilities in the south of England.

This project adds a new self-storage facility to our client's portfolio and provides self-store services for individuals and businesses in and around Swindon.

What We Did

We received an opportunity to submit a tender for this project.  Upon acceptance of our quote, we completed a survey for the steelwork package and fabrication drawings.

Once the drawings were completed and finalised, we set about the manufacturing and installation phase.

This installation was project phased so the store could open and commence trading while we finished installing the units.

The Challenge

Our biggest challenge was to rake-cut the storage units under the sloping roof.  Precision cutting was critical to the finished storage facility’s success to ensure the units fit the space available, ensuring minimum waste during the build phase and, of course, a perfect finish.

A ‘raked ceiling’ is an inclined ceiling, as opposed to a flat ceiling, with the roofline rising upwards to a single point. Inclined ceilings make great use of unused space. Still, it presented a challenge for this particular build, where we installed several individual storage units with the incline forming the ceiling of each storage unit.  Storage units installed against a squared ceiling are more typical.

The End Result

Cubic Storage are now running a successful high-security self-storage facility utilising all available space in the building.

We Are Happy to Say

Careful planning, design and excellence in execution are standard at USS, so when we saw this raked ceiling we set out to get every last inch of viable storage space into the building. We did just that.
