Pallet Gates – More Than Just Lifting Power

read

According to the Health And Safety Executive (HSE), falls from height are one of the most common causes of workplace injury – with over 35,280 incidents recorded in the 2020/21 period alone.

Pallet gates help mitigate the risk of these accidents in warehouse or factory settings – providing a safe access solution that protects staff while loading (or unloading) pallets onto a mezzanine floor or raised loading bay.

They provide the continuous edge protection needed to comply with the HSE’s Working At Height Regulations 2005 (WAHR). They’re easy to operate, facilitating the rapid movement of oversized or palletised goods throughout your workspace.

Fully Customised to Meet the Needs of Your Business

Whenever we work with a client to design or install a mezzanine floor in an industrial setting, we always offer to specify, manufacture and install pallet gates that are customised to meet the needs of their business.

This design includes specialist high pallet gates designed to accommodate large loads, articulated or counterbalanced pallet safety gates, and powder-coated safety gates designed to be highly visible and match the colours of pre-existing hand-rail if required.

Full Replacement Service for Damaged or Unsuitable Gates

We also offer a full replacement service for clients with damaged or unsuitable pallet safety gates. We can provide a bespoke service for safety gates at our 30,000 sq ft. manufacturing facility in Haverhill, Suffolk.

Pallet Gate Solutions You Can Rely On

The pallet gates we design, manufacture, and install for our clients offer a range of benefits over and above the primary function they perform.

As well as offering a safe means of loading and unloading goods, they are straightforward to operate – working on basic mechanical principles to remove the need for complex maintenance and limit opportunities for breakdown.

Need a Specific Customisation?

We offer a custom-built solution for pallet gates, meaning we can vary their design (or finish) to meet particular requirements. Although the appeal of a pallet gate is often the simplicity of its design and operation, there are times when a more complex solution is required.

In one such instance, a client needed a pallet gate that would allow them to lift pallets onto a mezzanine. A pre-existing roller door was in-situ where the pallet gate would need to be installed.

To provide a workable solution, we designed a bespoke gate with a unique sliding system – allowing the pallet gate to slide back when not needed for the roller door to be able to close.

Pallet Gates That Put Safety First

The design of USS pallet gates means that anyone using the gate stays behind the safety rail and there are no open or exposed edges.

Employees are protected, as the risk of objects - or pallets - falling from the mezzanine is minimised. Other safety considerations include pallet gates eliminating the need for employees to carry heavy loads up and down flights of stairs.

Our design can fit seamlessly with pre-existing guardrails or balustrades for all-around edge protection.

We can also make and install most pallet gates, from standard, up-and-over designs to concertina or articulated gates for more specialist applications.

Choosing The Right Pallet Gate

Generally speaking, pallet gates are a simple and cost-effective solution to a relatively straightforward problem, but there is some nuance to be explored here. Assuming that you’re looking for pallet gates designed to fit on a standard mezzanine floor, there are three main types to choose from:

Up And Over (Or Standard) Pallet Gates

An uncomplicated design that puts simplicity and ease of use first. This type of pallet safety gate is popular. It’s time-tested, proven and durable. Not to mention incredibly safe. Most of our mezzanines have this type of pallet safety gate.

Articulated Pallet Gates

Ideal for settings with limited headroom and other restrictions, articulated pallet gates offer a space-efficient alternative to the standard ‘up-and-over’ design. They’re also attractive, reliable and safe, providing all-around edge protection for mezzanine floor openings.

Counterbalance Pallet Gates

The definition of simplicity, counterbalance pallet gates have significantly few moving parts – eliminating the need for maintenance and maximising the lifespan of your gate. These gates also require minimal headroom and provide continuous protection that conforms to all mezzanine safety requirements.

A Full Design and Installation Process

Here at USS, we closely consult with our clients when designing a mezzanine floor and during the installation phase - or modifying an existing structure: consulting on every aspect, including the requirement for pallet gates.

We advise on the number of gates we think the installation will need, as well as the size and position of the gates – based on a combination of operational efficiency, safety, and future-proofing flexibility.

After all, experience has taught us that choosing the most suitable pallet gates is essential. You will want your new floor to be capable of dealing with everything from the type of goods stored to a full-blown operational move from simple storage to order fulfilment.

As an example of this in action, take a look at our Readie Construction case study. In this instance, we were working with a longstanding client to build a multi-tier mezzanine floor for a new build logistics and distribution centre.

The scale of this mezzanine, and the requirement for total flexibility, meant that the customer required concertina pallets gate on every level.
